Celebrating a Black Male Role Model

Celebrating a Black Male Role Model

LEO TUCKER

We are putting the spotlight on a black male role model this year. Mr. Leo Tucker will share a little bit of his personal history, including various steps he took to reach his significant achievements.

LEO TUCKER is a child of immigrant parents from Jamaica. Leo’s father, equipped with only a 2nd grade education, built a large business during the 1950’s and 1960’s, a time of great civic unrest and upheaval in the US. Leo used what he learned from his father to focus on his education and has built a successful business in financial planning. As Northwestern Mutual’s first African American Managing Partner, he has many interesting and noteworthy professional experiences. He will also share stories about his experience growing up as a minority and how to overcome obstacles and set meaningful goals for success. He has also spoken in 30 states in America, as well spoken on this topic in China and Singapore.

Mr. Tucker has made a name for himself in an industry that has not had many minorities in its executive ranks. As the first African-American managing partner at Northwestern Mutual, he is responsible for 190 employees and has seen both the investment and employee benefit businesses triple under his direction. Lives in McLean, VA with his wife and two children.

A Provocative & Honest Exploration of Racial Identity

HILARY NORTH

For the past three years our Camp has been exploring in more depth the topic of racial identity, as it becomes more important to our families and children as they get older. This year the parents will be viewing a special screening of a new documentary, “I’m Not Racist… Am I?”, which follows a diverse group of teens through a yearlong exploration of racial identity. Hilary North will then facilitate a discussion of the film and help us to consider the topic for ourselves, and what it means in our own lives and families. Ms. North will also meet with the older children. She will not show the whole film, but a few selected clips, and facilitate a Q&A with them at an age-appropriate level.

HILARY NORTH, Senior Facilitator for Point Made Films, is Director of Diversity & Equity Initiatives at The Calhoun School, a progressive pre-K to 12 independent school on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in New York City. She has been an educator, facilitator and consultant, working with communities on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion for eighteen years. As a black biracial woman and transracial adoptee, Hilary often makes use of her own life experience as a backdrop for her work with educators, young people and their families.
