IDENTITY & COMMUNITY (Parents As Allies, Guides, And Nurturers Of Ethiopian American Children)

IDENTITY & COMMUNITY (Parents As Allies, Guides, And Nurturers Of Ethiopian American Children)

Dr. YESHASHWORK KIBOUR

As first-generation Ethiopians growing up in the United States, our children are faced with opportunities and challenges that are uncommon, and have a strong impact on their emotional and psychological development. In this workshop, Dr. Kibour will address what she considers to be the three main pieces of knowledge:

  • First, as children grow, so must parenting styles in order to meet children where they are cognitively and developmentally. Children move from total dependence, ambivalence about wanting/needing independence, to demanding independence. Ethiopian proverb: “A house can’t be built for the rainy season that is past.”
  • Second, parenting requires a constant nurturing of one’s soul in order to recognize when a change in parenting is needed, to engage in an active process of identifying what one feels is the right next level of parenting for them and their child. Ethiopian Proverb: “Eat when the food is ready; speak when the time is right.”
  • Third, the sociopolitical context of raising a black child in America brings with it numerous challenges and joys. This reality is something that all parents here will face. We can benefit greatly from approaching this truth with intention, curiosity, and kindness in order to help children grow to have strong identities and a sense of community. Ethiopian Proverb: “Cow dung can’t be gathered where no cow has been.”

The children will engage in developmentally appropriate conversations about family, peer, and community. What things do/should you talk about with parents vs. peers vs. other important people in your life? How do you define community? Who is your community? Ethiopian proverb: “Fifty lemons are a load for one person, but for fifty persons they are perfume.”

Dr. YESHASHWORK KIBOUR was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She lived in Zambia (for 4 years) and India (for 1 year) before she migrated to the US at the age of 14. She currently lives in Washington, DC with her husband and two children, Amanuel (age 7) and Gabirel (age 4). Dr. Kibour is a psychologist who has worked with many families (primarily parents of Ethiopian children) nationwide that have presented with various parenting dilemmas. Dr. Kibour feels that being an immigrant parent herself helps her to think about how to help her children navigate a very “racialized” America. Additionally, as an expert in trauma, particularly immigration trauma, she is moved to share what she knows about how trauma issues intersect and impact child development. International adoptions, particularly adoption of Ethiopian children by American families that include cross-cultural adoptions, are also of particular interest to Dr. Kibour. She feels inspired by the willingness of adoptive parents to continue to grow and learn for the betterment of their children, Ethiopia’s children, by voluntarily attending events such as the Ethiopian Heritage and Cultural Camp.

SOSSINA WONDIMU

Delicious With Plenty Of Variety

Street food vendors are increasingly gaining popularity in Addis and many of the larger cities of Ethiopia. Street food vending creates job opportunities in the city, especially for women. Whether you are sharing a taxi ride or just walking around the city streets, you are likely to encounter a street food vendor calling out his/her snack item(s). Vendors either carry their food already made at home around the streets, taxi stops, or they fry them at the sidewalks. City people usually enjoy these tasty and inexpensive street foods! Even if you are not back home on the streets of Addis, but just happen to stop by your local Ethiopian market, you will know how to ask for your favorite Ethiopian street food. After this class you will be confident knowing what you order is delicious and easy on the pocket. From kategna to bombolina, from sambussa to chornake, from kolo to shimbira dube, from corn on the cob to roasted corn kernels, from anbasha to ocholoni you will learn about the simple pleasures of Ethiopian street food.

ADVISE TO PARENTS AND KIDS

ADVISE TO PARENTS AND KIDS

DAVID TRIMNER

Reaching A Child’s Heart

As children, they talked to you about everything. But as they grow up, communication becomes more and more difficult. We will discuss common roadblocks to communication between parents and children, and explore ways to break down those barriers.

“Who Am I?”

In this ever-changing and always challenging world we live in, knowing who you are and what you stand for will help you to make wise decisions when you are under pressure. In this session we will discuss self-identity and how it empowers you to take control of your own life. We will explore age-appropriate goal-setting based on each child’s understanding of their own strengths, weaknesses, and convictions.”

Both parents and children in the audience will appreciate David Trimner’s well-honed analytical method for breaking complex issues down to manageable pieces. From this beginning, his discussions will typically build back to a recognizable, self-evident, whole that is a highly successful teaching tool. Parents will recognize that David and his family represent one version of our families at Camp. David and his wife Shaunda are parents of 5 bi-racial children living in the culturally and racially diverse community of Northern Virginia. In short, with children ranging from 24 years old down to 3, his parenting experience runs the full gamut from married daughter to pre-kindergarten son of not quite 4 years old

DAVID TRIMNER is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and tax professional focused on non-profit and charitable organizations. He is also sought after public speaker that had given hundreds of speeches over his 18-year professional career. David resides in Fairfax, VA with his wife and three of their five children. NATURAL HAIR CARE

NATURAL HAIR CARE

APRIL REED

The Natural Hair Care for Children is an instructive and informative discussion that will explain how to care for both girl and boys natural hair. This fun and easy workshop will take the guess work out of prod-uct selection, braiding and twisting techniques, detangling, beading, solutions for dealing with breakage and so much more. The goal is to protect, strengthen and nurture the natural beauty of your child’s hair so that he/she may wear it with pride and confidence.

APRIL REED, born in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio currently lives in Gainesville, VA with her husband of 3 years, Justin; and she is a mom to a beautiful daughter, Tiffany. Mrs. Reed was “natural” when it was not popular and did not like it. Her mom refused to relax her hair, well mom knew best! Which is why Mrs. Reed stopped her quarterly relaxers in 2010. Several mini chops later, she embraced her curls and encouraged everyone around her to do the same. Mrs. Reed’s main goal in going natural was to achieve healthy hair. Since she primarily has very soft curls, but also a section of hair that is very coarse, she had to learn to care for both types. Working hard to find products that did not break the bank, but deliver for all types of hair, she created a Daily Moisturizer great for skin and hair. Her product helps hair retain moisture, which is necessary for natural hair care. By coincidence, Mrs. Reed has found that her product has helped a few people with eczema
